Volunteer Stewards

Volunteers collected seed from the railroad prairie at Brundige Road. Due to widening of the tracks, the prairie was relocated and these seeds were used to enhance the new site.

Natural area degradation—due to the introduction of alien species, the suppression of fire, and increasing urbanization – is putting increasing pressure on the region’s natural areas. In order to maintain and improve the natural quality of lands for which it is responsible, Fox Valley Land Foundation recruits and trains volunteers who are interested in native areas.  They can help maintain these mini-wilderness areas and learn about native ecosystems and responsible land stewardship while volunteering.

Some of the activities for which volunteers are needed:

  • Seed collecting, cleaning and planting
  • Pulling or herbiciding alien or invasive weedy species
  • Cutting and burning invasive woody brush
  • Cutting down non-native invasive trees (chain saws needed!)
  • Assisting in controlled burns of natural areas
