Heritage Land Registry

The Fox Valley is a landscape formed long ago as glaciers advanced and retreated repeatedly across the land, leaving vast expanses of rolling hills and fertile fields. When the early pioneers arrived, a major factor in their decision to settle here was the region’s wealth of natural resources. Situated in the valley of a clear, swiftly moving river with a variety of habitats, the area abounded with fish and wildlife, fertile prairie soils and scenic splendor.

Today, only a fraction of the native habitat that greeted the early pioneers survives.
We need to work together to steward the remaining natural areas for the benefit of
future generations.

Private landowners can play an important role in preserving the land heritage in the Fox River Valley. Those who are interested in stewarding their lands are invited to participate in the voluntary Heritage Land Registry program.

What is the Fox Valley Heritage Land Registry program?
The goal of the Registry is to conserve and protect the biological richness of the land heritage of our area. Fox Valley Land Foundation wishes to recognize private landowners who are interested in conserving and stewarding their land for the benefit of the ecosystems and wildlife that are found there. The Registry encourages active land management.

Can I join the Heritage Land Registry program?
Yes, if your land is in the Fox River watershed and contains:
areas of open space which contribute significantly to the region’s landscape
plants, animals or natural communities typical of the region, including areas that have been restored.

How does the program work?
To participate in the program, you agree to stewardship and conservation of your land. You will be recognized with a sign and certificate. The Land Foundation can provide a survey of the resources on your property and technical assistance with a stewardship plan. We ask that you let us know if you plan to sell or transfer your land.

Is this agreement legally binding?
NO. This is a voluntary agreement that may be canceled at any time by the landowner.

Will the general public have access to my land if I join the program?
NO. As a private property owner, you determine if you want any public access.

Read a testimonial from current program participants, Steve and Laura Pittner. It is located on our News page. There you will see the Fall 2004 Newsletter PDF containing their article. News in brief on the program is also located on our News page listing in the Member Update PDF.
